The top three areas of maintenance to your engine are lubrication, cooling and clean fuel.

OIL CHANGES

Oil changes are necessary to keeping your engine properly lubricated and ensuring that your engine running to its fullest and longest life. Oil in a diesel engine works hard—much harder than in a gas engine—because the engine works at a high temperature and under extreme pressure. Diesel oil also contains traces of sulfur, especially in countries other than the U.S., which gets transformed into destructive sulfuric acid inside your engine. How boats are used randomly and how some are used at idling speed without proper warming up-the inconsistency can damage the oil life. When the engine doesn’t warm up to operating temperature, this can cause moisture to condense inside, creating sulfuric acid and also a buildup of carbon.

COOLING SYSTEMS

Understanding cooling systems are the key to keeping you diesel engine running at full capacity. The majority of engine failure is due to cooling systems malfunctioning, so properly maintaining your cooling system is very important. Problems often happen when the raw water that is brought in to cool the engine can get blocked by debris or barnacles over time. This is the quickest way to get your engine to overheat. Since diesel engines operate at a piston compression that is three times that of a gasoline engine, overheating can cause serious damage to your engine.

CLEAN FUEL

Keeping your fuel clean is vital to keeping your engine running. Dirty fuel filters can shut down your engine at the worst time and can put you in dangerous situations. Dirty fuel won’t ruin your engine but can make it run way less efficiently. Over time when your fuel tanks can accumulate condensation, especially when empty, that can leak into your engine and ruin your fuel filters.
